HISTORY OF THE GOLDEN EAGLES
In early 1973, a group of 21 Continental Captains gathered and "THE GOLDEN EAGLES" was born. The first elected officers of the Golden Eagles were: George M. Corbett, President, Clifford M. Pleggenkuhle Sr., Vice President, Robert W. Gray, Secretary/Treasurer. The other members were: Mack E. Austin, Amous J. Cann, Billy D. Carpenter, Thomas A. Frazier, Thomas E. Green, William A. Hart, Richard E. Hughes, John M. Leggio, Raymond H. Melberg, Gene J. Newman, Eugene A. Oliver, Jack K. Painter, Robert M. Powers, Allan P. Shelley, Harold W. Spores, Jack R. Thompson, J. (Bob) Wenholz, and Lin S. Wright.
Since that day the membership has grown to over 800 pilots and is growing. The organization formally meets once each year, produces the Golden Contrails Magazine three times a year, most of its members are "on-line," and all support this web site. Since merger of Continental Airlines and United Airlines, The Golden Eagles are continuing our efforts to speak out for retired pilots where necessary.
We are aware that someday the Retired United Pilots Association and The Golden Eagles memberships may combine to continue the work and representation that both organizations do for the retired pilots.
The principle objective of The Golden Eagles remains to keep active and retired pilots of the merged airline in touch with each other. Every United pilot, age fifty and over, from whatever background is cordially invited to become a member. Retired pilots administer our rather active membership, most of whom are on our extensive e-mail system. We have ongoing liaison and communications with management of the now United Airlines. There are no agendas other than to perpetuate long standing friendships, maintain an active liaison with our company, and help insure that all pilots in retirement are kept informed on a variety of airline and retirement issues.
If you desire to join with us, see the Membership page of this web site.
