SURVIVING SPOUSE TRAVEL
Recently a surviving spouse of one of our deceased members submitted an inquiry regarding the summary of pass travel that was sent to our members recently. She pointed out that the summary did not mention a summary of surviving spouses pass travel benefits. In keeping with President Bill Chambers` desire to keep our membership informed of the current pass travel policies, the response to her inquiry is quoted below for the benefit of the surviving spouses in our membership who may have similar questions.
Inquiry from surviving spouse:
This does not mention surviving spouses and our pass category. I'm assuming we still have privileges? Are we ahead of anyone? 👵 If I remember right we can get reduced full fare travel on United but not other airlines. Is this correct?
Response:
In answer to your question, the recently published summary of pass travel does not mention surviving spouses, but that information is still presented under the Travel section of the flyingtogether website, https://flyingtogether.ual.com, under the Travel Policies section and the Boarding Priority and the Survivor Pass Travel subheadings.
Specifically, as a surviving spouse your pass category is SA2R and you will go ahead of several other categories of pass travelers, however, the first 30 days following the death of a spouse, the surviving spouse will have a pass category of SA1P. I have attached the chart (as edited) from the Boarding Priority section of the flyingtogether website Travel section below for your convenience. Scroll all the way to the bottom of this email to access the attachment. The chart included shows where an SA2R traveler (Retiree Personal Travel) stands in regard to other travelers. Since this grouping should contain a listing for Surviving Spouses as well as Retiree Personal Travel, but unfortunately does not, the chart has been notated with that information added and highlighted. All categories of travelers listed below Retiree Personal Travel (the third grouping from the top) would board after you as a surviving spouse with SA2R boarding priority. You will board among the SA2R category travelers according to your deceased retired spouses years of active service. The chart included in the Surviving Spouse Travel section is also attached with the applicable information highlighted for reference.
You are correct in that surviving spouses do get reduced full fare, positive space travel on United, but not on other airlines.
Hope this answers your questions.
